Every Day Brings New Possibilities
The weather forecast the night before called for rain and storms.
For a moment, those thoughts tried to take root in my mind. But not every seed belongs in my garden.
So I released them.
After all, worrying about tomorrow's weather has never changed tomorrow's weather.
Instead, I chose a different focus.
Today's affirmation: Every day brings new possibilities.
Today, I choose to see opportunities where others see obstacles. I welcome new beginnings, meaningful connections, and moments that inspire growth.
I welcome abundance.
I welcome joy.
I welcome purpose.
The day had already begun teaching lessons before I even reached my destination.
I adjusted my morning routine and prepared for jury duty. As I entered the destination into my GPS, it immediately directed me toward a highway I have never enjoyed driving.
If you've ever driven a route that makes your shoulders tense before you even get there, you know the feeling.
I looked at the map and thought, Surely there is another way.
So I started exploring.
And there was.
Not only was there another route, but it was less congested, less stressful, and far more enjoyable than the one I would have automatically taken. Later, I learned there had been an accident on the highway I had avoided.
That simple decision made me think about life.
How often do we accept the first route presented to us?
How often do we assume there is only one way forward because it is the most familiar or the most traveled?
Gardeners know better.
Roots do not grow in a straight line. They search. They adapt. They find another path around rocks, hard soil, and obstacles.
Sometimes growth begins with a simple question:
Is there another way?
As I arrived, another surprise awaited me.
The parking area listed on my instructions was closed, and I was directed elsewhere.
Once again, what appeared to be an inconvenience turned out to be an advantage. The new parking area was actually closer to the courthouse.
Two opportunities before I had even entered the building.
I was beginning to see a pattern.
As I walked toward the courthouse, I passed people whose gardens looked very different from mine. Some appeared tired. Some seemed burdened. Some looked as though life had dealt them more than their share of challenges.
It reminded me that every person we pass is tending a garden we know nothing about.
Inside the building, we waited.
And waited.
And waited some more.
No phone.
No computer.
No television.
No book.
No distractions.
Just silence.
Now, patience has never been one of my strongest qualities.
I like learning.
Creating.
Writing.
Doing.
Sitting quietly with absolutely nothing in my hands felt almost unnatural.
The silence seemed louder with every passing minute.
Truth be told, a single minute felt like ten.
As I sat there becoming increasingly fidgety, I had another realization:
I am not cut out to be idle.
Sitting in a silent room with nothing to do felt like a test of endurance.
Thankfully, I had brought my journal.
What started as waiting became an opportunity to reflect.
I began writing observations, thoughts, and lessons from the morning. Almost immediately, my mind settled.
The very thing I had viewed as a challenge became a gift.
Soon the judge entered.
We stood.
We sat.
We listened.
We learned about the process.
And then we waited some more.
The experience was different from my previous experience serving on a different type of jury duty. In this court, the process was straightforward. Today’s cases would be handled by the end of day, and if a trial proceeded, it would conclude once a unanimous jury decision is reached.
Of course, that is assuming a trial is needed at all.
So there we sat, like seeds planted in a row, waiting to see what would grow from the day.
Around 11:00, I opened my journal and wrote:
"The clerk is preparing our certificates and getting ready to release us."
A short while later, that is exactly what happened.
No trial.
No jury selection.
No dramatic courtroom moment.
Just a certificate, a small payment, and the completion of my civic duty.
I had awakened early.
Changed my schedule.
Driven through traffic.
Spent several hours away from home.
Could I have viewed the experience as an inconvenience?
Certainly.
But I chose a different perspective.
I learned something about a process I had never experienced before.
I made a new connection along the way.
I discovered a better route than the one I normally take.
I found unexpected moments for reflection.
And I was reminded that opportunities rarely arrive wearing name tags.
Sometimes they show up disguised as detours.
Sometimes they look like closed parking lots.
Sometimes they appear as conversations with strangers.
And sometimes they arrive in the form of waiting.
The gardener understands this.
You can plant a seed today and see absolutely nothing tomorrow.
Yet beneath the surface, roots are forming.
Growth is taking place.
Preparation is happening.
Not every day produces a harvest.
Some days simply prepare the soil.
And that is valuable too.
Today reminded me that every day truly brings new possibilities.
The opportunities were there all along.
The difference was that I was looking for them.
I continue to welcome abundance.
I continue to welcome joy.
I continue to welcome purpose.
And I remain open to whatever tomorrow decides to plant in my path.
Your Mind. Your Power. Your Reality.
